What is a D-U-N-S Number?
A DUNS number (Data Universal Numbering System number) is a unique nine-digit identifier for businesses, created and maintained by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B).
In Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), the DUNS number is frequently used as a unique identifier for trading partners. It ensures accurate identification of parties involved in the exchange of EDI documents.
Businesses can apply for a DUNS number through the Dun & Bradstreet website. Once issued, the number is permanent and remains with the business even if it relocates or changes ownership.
Example:
If a company named "ABC Corporation" has a DUNS number of 123456789
, this number would be used to uniquely identify ABC Corporation in various business transactions and registrations.
